In the first of this 2-part workshop, we’ll focus on the opening poses of the classical Surya Namaskar, addressing the proper alignment for reaching high in Mountain Pose and a healthy Forward Fold that suits all backs and hamstrings. We will examine Half Forward Fold and the leap to Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-limbed Staff Pose), and practice building the strength and stability in the move towards Upward-Facing Dog. We will establish the building blocks that will keep your sun salutations seamless and injury-free.
In the second of this 2-part workshop, we’ll continue our observation of Surya Namaskar and Upward-Facing Dog, and move on to the techniques that support core integration and a happy low back in the transition to Downward Dog. By analyzing the alignment principals of Downward-Dog, we can unlock the secrets of this pivotal pose, which can do wonders for a lifetime of healthy, joyful weight-bearing practice! Finally, we’ll look at ways to address the challenge of hopping forward with soft landings in the final poses of this beautiful flowing sequence.
